Background: Acrylic and bisacryl resins are widely used both during the temporization phase as well as for provisional restorations and the effect of external agents on dentin sensitivity can be reduced by the obliteration of the tubules. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate diffusion of methyl methacrylate monomer through dentin by high performance liquid  chromatography (HPLC) after three different desensitizing procedures during the fabrication of two different provisional crown materials.Materials and Methods: Forty extracted restoration and caries free human premolar teeth were used in this study. Thermoplastic vacuum formed material was used as a matrix to fabricate provisional restorations for each tooth before crown preparation. Teeth were prepared for a metal supported ceramic crown with 1 mm shoulder margins and then crown parts were  separated from cementoenamel junction with a carborundum disk  perpendicular to the long axis of the teeth. To the cementoenamel junction of each tooth a polypropylene chamber was attached that contains 1.5 cm3of deionized distilled water. Prepared teeth were divided into four groups (n = 10) including control, desensitizing agent (DA) application,  neodymium.doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser irradiation (LI), and LI after DA application groups. After application of DA (except control) each group were divided into two subgroups for fabrication of provisional restorations (n = 5). Two autopolymerizing provisional materials (Imident (Imicryl) and Systemp C and B (Ivoclar, vivadent)) were used to fabricate provisional restorations using the strips. Water elutes were analyzed by HPLC at 10 min and 24 h.Results: The monomer diffusion values varied statistically according to desensitizing procedures, provisional resin systems, and the time periods. Monomer diffusion through dentin surfaces desensitized with Nd: YAG LI after DA application was the lowest. Conclusions: Nd: YAG LI in association with DA application is an effective combination to eliminate monomer diffusion through dentin to pulpal chamber.Key words: Dentin hypersensitivity, dentin permeability, laser, monomer diffusion, provisional crow

Hacking the Non-Technical Brain: Maximizing Retention in a Core Introductory IT Course

    Get PDF
Maximizing student retention of, and ability to apply, technical material in introductory information technology courses is a complex task, especially with respect to the general student population. This population struggles with the application of programming concepts in the time-constrained testing environment. Our study considers the implementation of daily quizzes in a core-curriculum information technology and programming course as a means to improve student concept retention and application. Between the first and second exams, the instructors implemented a series of high-frequency, no-risk quizzes. Of the four sections of the course that each instructor taught, two sections each were provided with the quizzes as the experimental group and two remained with the standard curriculum as the control. The results demonstrate the benefits of frequent, effortful recall on student performance in a core-curriculum information technology and programming course

Autonomous shuttling driven by an oscillating reaction: Proof of principle in a cucurbit[7]uril-bodipy pseudorotaxane

    Get PDF
A bipyridinium dication-substituted Bodipy fluorophore, with a terminal carboxylic acid function, provides two alternative stations for cucurbit[7]uril. Changing pH from basic to acidic results in shuttling of the cucurbit[7]uril from one station to another. In addition, this shuttling is accompanied by a change in the emissive properties of the Bodipy dye, which is only observed in the presence of cucurbit[7]uril. More striking, is a demonstration of autonomous shuttling of the pseudorotaxane system in an oscillating pH system. © 2013 American Chemical Society

Analysis of the Transport Process Providing Spin Injection through an Fe/AlGaAs Schottky Barrier

Electron spin polarizations of 32% are obtained in a GaAs quantum well via electrical injection through a reverse-biased Fe/AlGaAs Schottky contact. An analysis of the transport data using the Rowell criteria demonstrates that single step tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism. The current-voltage data show a clear zero-bias anomaly and phonon signatures corresponding to the GaAs-like and AlAs-like longitudinal-optical phonon modes of the AlGaAs barrier, providing further evidence for tunneling. These results provide experimental confirmation of several theoretical analyses indicating that tunneling enables significant spin injection from a metal into a semiconductor.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to AP

Electrical Spin Pumping of Quantum Dots at Room Temperature

We report electrical control of the spin polarization of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at room temperature. This is achieved by electrical injection of spin-polarized electrons from an Fe Schottky contact. The circular polarization of the QD electroluminescence shows that a 5% electron spin polarization is obtained in the InAs QDs at 300 K, which is remarkably insensitive to temperature. This is attributed to suppression of the spin relaxation mechanisms in the QDs due to reduced dimensionality. These results demonstrate that practical regimes of spin-based operation are clearly attainable in solid state semiconductor devices.Comment: 4 figures, accepted by Appl. Phys. Let

Ising model on 3D random lattices: A Monte Carlo study

We report single-cluster Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on three-dimensional Poissonian random lattices with up to 128,000 approx. 503 sites which are linked together according to the Voronoi/Delaunay prescription. For each lattice size quenched averages are performed over 96 realizations. By using reweighting techniques and finite-size scaling analyses we investigate the critical properties of the model in the close vicinity of the phase transition point. Our random lattice data provide strong evidence that, for the available system sizes, the resulting effective critical exponents are indistinguishable from recent high-precision estimates obtained in Monte Carlo studies of the Ising model and \phi^4 field theory on three-dimensional regular cubic lattices.Comment: 35 pages, LaTex, 8 tables, 8 postscript figure

CYP2C8 and CYP2C9 polymorphisms in relation to tumour characteristics and early breast cancer related events among 652 breast cancer patients

BACKGROUND: CYP2C8/9 polymorphisms may influence breast cancer-free survival after diagnosis due to their role in the metabolism of tamoxifen, paclitaxel, and other chemotherapy. cytochrome P450 (CYP)2C8/9 metabolise arachidonic acid to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids, which enhance migration and invasion in vitro and promote angiogenesis in vivo. We aimed to investigate the frequency of CYP2C8/9 polymorphisms in relation to breast tumour characteristics and disease-free survival. METHODS: A prospective series of 652 breast cancer patients from southern Sweden was genotyped for CYP2C8*3, CYP2C8*4, CYP2C9*2, and CYP2C9*3. Blood samples and questionnaires were obtained pre- and postoperatively. Clinical information and tumour characteristics were obtained from patients' charts and pathology reports. RESULTS: Frequencies of CYP2C8/9 polymorphisms were similar to healthy European populations. Significantly less node involvement (P=0.002) and fewer PR+ tumours (P=0.012) were associated with CYP2C8*4. Median follow-up was 25 months and 52 breast cancer-related events were reported. In a multivariate model, CYP2C8/9*3/*1*/*2/*1 was the only factor associated with increased risk for early events in 297 tamoxifen-treated, ER-positive patients, adjusted HR 2.54 (95%CI 1.11-5.79). The effect appeared to be driven by CYP2C8*3, adjusted HR 8.56 (95%CI 1.53-51.1). CONCLUSION: Polymorphic variants of CYP2C8/9 may influence breast tumour characteristics and disease-free survival in tamoxifen-treated patients
